M2 Advertising Information
(effective 01-15-2008)
The Messenger is published in standard newsprint size
(14"w x 23"h), in full color, as a high resolution (300 DPI)
Adobe Acrobat (PDF) file. This means that readers will be
able to zoom in and read your ad in detail the same way they
would read a First Life newspaper ad. We believe this method
of publishing is superior to that of any other Second Life
newspaper.
NOTE: Most ads are
designed to be printed out on a paper product, but
publishing such ads electronically will make them look
lighter, brighter, and sometimes washed out. We recommend
that ads be web imported to check the color before they are
submitted for publication. We recommend that you save your
ad as a JPG image with minimal compression, and RGB color.

Display advertising in the Messenger is priced
at L$60 per column inch for SL entities.

FIRST
LIFE / REAL LIFE ENTITIES
Real Life businesses (i.e. businesses that market real
life products only, and have no SL presence):
Display advertising in the Messenger is priced at
US$6.00 per column inch for RL entities. If you are
advertising a business that operates outside of
SL and does business in the Real World only, your ad
will be subject to this rate.
EXAMPLE: RealGood Corporation wants to market
its 512 MB Hyperpixel video card to SLers. The ad will
direct readers to their website. The US$6.00 rate would
apply.
Real Life businesses that have
an SL presence: Display advertising in
the Messenger is priced at US$4.00 per column inch
for RL entities which are in-world.
EXAMPLE:
Konichiwa Corporation has a virtual showroom for its
cars in SL. It wants to advertise in the M2. The
US$4.00 rate would apply.
PAYMENT
Payment for ads should
be made in-world to George
Backbite. PayPal is available for payment
in USD. PayPal payments should be made to
katt.kongo@gmail.com.

IF YOU MAKE PAYMENT FROM AN ALT WITH WHICH WE ARE
NOT FAMILIAR, YOUR ACCOUNT MAY NOT RECEIVE PROPER
CREDIT. If you want to make payment via
an alternate account, please be sure we are aware of
it.
REFUNDS
If an ad is cancelled,
a refund may be issued or credit applied toward
future ads. No refunds will be issued after 30
days from the payment date.
AD
PRIORITIES
Priority will be given
to advertisers who consistently renew their ads
and/or place long ad contracts. Please understand
that not everyone's ad can have prominent placement
every week.
ABOUT COLUMN INCHES
- Here is how the
Column Inch calculation works:
The full width of a single page is divided into five
(5) columns. The cost of an ad is calculated by
taking the number of columns wide that you wish your
ad to be (2, 3, or 5), multiplied by the vertical
size in inches (the full page height being 22").
Some examples:

SL BUSINESS
A half page would be 11" x 5 columns = 55
column inches, x L$60 = L$3300.
An ad that is 4" x 3 columns would be 12 column
inches, x L$60 = L$720.
REAL LIFE BUSINESSES
SL
PRESENCE
A half page would be
11" x 5 columns = 55 column inches, x US$4.00 =
US$220.00.
An ad that is 4" x 3 columns would be 12 column inches,
x US$4.00 = US$48.00.
NO SL
PRESENCE
A half page would be
11" x 5 columns = 55 column inches, x US$6.00 =
US$330.00.
An ad that is 4" x 3 columns would be 12 column inches,
x US$6.00 = US$72.00.
There are
two exceptions, for ads that are classified as "premium
advertising":

Full page ads
are L$7000.
- The "Front
Page Topper" and
"Front
Page Underline," which are 1" high ads across the
top and bottom of the front page (5 columns wide),
are
L$5000 each. There are, of course, only ONE of each
of these ads available per issue.

VOLUME DISCOUNT
- If you pay for four weeks or more at a time (does
not have to be consecutive), you will receive a 10%
discount off the total of your ad costs. For 12-25
weeks, the discount increases to 15%, and for 26
weeks or more, the discount is 20%.
AD COPY SPECS
If you wish to design your own display ad for the
Messenger, it must conform to the following
specifications:
Ads should be submitted as a 300 DPI JPG image file.
Other formats may be used, however, e-mailing them
will generally be difficult due to their large file
size. For ease in e-mailing, use JPG. Your resulting
file will be a fraction of the size of any of the
other formats. If your graphics software has an
option to select the amount of compression, select
the LEAST amount for best appearance. It will still
be much smaller than if you choose another graphics
format. Resolution should be 300 dpi.
To calculate the proper size for your image, use the
following tables:
PIXEL SIZES: To calculate by the pixel
dimensions, use this guideline.

Please note that effective Sept. 1, 2006, 1 and 4 column
advertising is no longer available.

If you prefer to
supply component images (i.e. logos, photos, etc.) for
your ad and have our ad department design the ad, then
please use the above information as a basic guideline.
Rates for design work are typically equal to whatever
the ad rate is for one week.
CLASSIFIED & PERSONALS ADS
- Classified ads are L$100 per ad for up to
20 words. Each additional word is L$20. To submit
classified ads, e-mail your ad to

with the word “Classified” in the Subject field.
Personal ads are also accepted. These ads MUST be kept
PG; those that violate this rule will not be published.
Use shorthand in personal ads, i.e. “SWM seeks SWF.”
Submit personal in the same manner described above.
Personal ads are L$150 for up to 20 words, and each
additional word is L$20.
AD DEADLINES
- The Messenger is published every Tuesday. The
deadline for ads is the preceding Saturday at 10am SLT.
