The structure, which according to Blondin Linden was created by Brent Linden, is a memorial dedicated to Haiti. After Brent unveiled the statue, Blondin gave a short explanation of its meaning.
"The tree is growing through the rubble of the quake, standing proud and fruitful -- representing bounty and prosperity for the Haitian people. Some more obscure symbolism is in the build itself: 1 tree (January) standing 12 meters high (12th of January) on a plinth made of 16 slices on the top (4 pm) and 53 slices on the bottom (53 minutes past the hour). This was the local time of the earthquake. The plinth is made of a coral rock which is what Haiti sits upon," he stated.
There was also a short speech by M2 Publisher Katt Kongo, who said, "... online, I met people who pushed and inspired me. I met people who made me laugh, cry and, more importantly, think. Growing up in a small rural town, my world was tiny. By making friends online, that world expanded as I learned about new cultures, lifestyles and more."
She added, "This belief in the power of relationships is why we are here today, because of those friends who mean so much to us. Today shouldn't be one of sadness, but of celebration... that we were so fortunate to meet those residents who have since departed both worlds. It's a day to share stories of how these people touched our lives, and hopefully make new friends in the process."
